SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- There are thousands of registered charities in California, and some may be raising money for soliciting for other donations to help firefighters battling the fires raging throughout the state.

Consumers may want to know how to be sure their money is being spent the way they intend.

The attorney general suggests asking a charity or nonprofit what percentage of donations will be paid for fundraising and other expenses. Charities are required, by law, to disclose this information.

If someone claims to be raising money for a fire service organization or other group, call and confirm that with the organization before you donate.

Also, never give out your credit card information over the phone. Write a check instead.
