Consumers can spend hundreds of dollars on a cell phone these days before making a single call, but they can get the phone and plenty of extras for less than they think.
Consumer Reports' Chris Bucsko has recently tested cell phones, looking at 19 different ones made for leading service providers, including Verizon, Cingular, AT&T Wireless and Sprint. Testers looked at voice quality, features and design.
"Cell phones are much smaller this year. Most of them weigh five ounces or less," Bucsko said.More cell phones than ever have features like text messaging so you can send and receive typed messages and hands-free technology like voice-activated dialing. When all the results were in, Consumer Reports found three good values for under $100.If AT&T or Cingular is your carrier, try the Motorola V120T. For Sprint customers, the Samsung SPH-A460 is your best bet. And if you use Verizon or Alltel, there's the Kyocera KWC 2235.All these phones offer voice-activated dialing and text messaging to help consumers stay connected on the go.Consumer Reports found that wireless phone companies offer lots of promotions on their phones, so prices can fluctuate significantly.
