SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Tuesday marked the deadline for school districts to notify employees that they may be laid off in the next year.
Hundreds of workers received the letters this year, and many of them blame Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. They say his "broken promises" have put the jobs of hundreds of school officials at risk. Parents, teachers, school board members and others rallied at the state Capitol in protest Tuesday. "My first year in San Juan (School District), I received a pink slip," said teacher Stephanie Floyd-Smith. "Today I'm receiving my second pink slip in three years. San Juan Unified has to reduce its workforce due to the governor's broken promises, which has cost our school district $20 million. This is a direct hit on students." The group tried to deliver 1,500 symbolic pink slips with the signatures of school officials and teachers to the governor Tuesday, but Schwarzenegger's office refused to accept them.
