Chicks' Maines Speaks Out Against War Again

Maines Says People 'Misled' About War In Iraq

POSTED: 6:40 am PST November 24, 2003

A serious backlash earlier this year hasn't stopped Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines from speaking out against the war in Iraq again.

Dixie ChicksMaines told NBC's "Today" show Friday that she thinks "people are fighting a war that they didn't know they were going to be fighting."

And, she added, "they were misled by people who should have been asking questions and weren't."

Fans and country music stations across the country boycotted the Dixie Chicks' music in March after Maines told a concert crowd in London, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

The country trio -- consisting of Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Robinson -- are all from Texas.

A few days later, Maines clarified her remarks about President George W. Bush on the group's Web site.

"I feel the president is ignoring the opinions of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world," Maines said in the statement. "My comments were made in frustration and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

Maines also said on the "Today" show Friday that she was "saddened" by the war.

Maines said rather than feeling vindicated by how the war has unfolded, she said she "would have liked to have been proven wrong."

The Dixie Chicks have just released a live CD and DVD of their world tour.
