It looks as though Michael Moore's blistering documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11," will not be heating up this year's Golden Globes.
According to Variety, the film will not be considered by the Globes' organization, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, because it does not have a category that honors documentaries. Best film Globes are given out yearly in two categories: Best Picture, Drama and Best Picture, Musical or Comedy.Released in theaters at the end of June, the film -- which criticizes President George W. Bush's handling of the Sept. 11 attacks and the war in Iraq -- broke new ground for documentaries by grossing $119 million domestically and $99 million overseas.HFPA president Lorenzo Soria told Variety that it "would be unfair to tell other documentarians ' 'Fahrenheit' qualified and yours didn't" and that "It would be unfair to make an exception" to their rules.Variety said that some HFPA members proposed Thursday a special career award for Moore, but that was defeated by the members.According to the trade publication, Tom Ortenberg, the president of Lions Gate Films Releasing (which helped distribute the film in theaters) said in a statement Monday that he and his fellow distributors were disappointed that the HFPA would not be recognizing "Fahrenheit.""Fahrenheit 9/11" wasn't the only high-profile film to be dealt a blow by the HFPA: Mel Gibson's controversial biblical epic "The Passion of the Christ" doesn't qualify in either of the Globes' Best Picture categories either because the organization considers it a foreign language film."Fahrenheit 9/11" still has a shot at Oscar recognition -- in all categories its eligible in except Best Documentary. In September, Moore formally removed "Fahrenheit" from the category so it could compete for Best Picture. The nominations for the 62 Golden Globes will be announced Dec. 13 and the awards will be handed out Jan. 16 in Los Angeles. This year's Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 25 and the statuettes will be presented Feb. 27 in Hollywood, Calif.
