INDIANAPOLIS -- Some children who have symptoms that seem to indicate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may actually have vision problems -- not ADHD -- according to television station WRTV.
More than 10 million children have visual perception deficit, a condition in which the eyes play tricks on people, making it hard to process information. The condition can be treated without drugs, said Dr. Mary VanHoy of the Indiana Vision Improvement Center. Vision exercises are the key."It's just taking away one more stumbling block and raising that child's self-esteem so they know they're not stupid, that they are working hard," VanHoy said. Some behavioral optometrists say visual perception deficit might be the true problem for half the children diagnosed with ADHD, Matthews reported.
