New Facial Filler Claims To Last Longer Than Others

Carla Sigerseth feels like she is in her 50s but says her face shows the truth.

"The lines are really bothering me. They really seem to age me."

At 65 years old, Sigerseth is hoping to look closer to the way she feels by filling in the lines in her face.

"I want it to match how I feel. Does that sound odd?" Sigerseth asked.

She is a patient at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Northern California where she is trying out a newly FDA-approved collagen filler called Evolence. Unlike similar products that can last several months -- this one has been shown to last about a year.

"It's collagen, and as we age we lose collagen, so it's a very logical thing to put back in," said Dr. Susan Silva, a practicing dermatologist for 16 years.

Silva has already used Evolence a few times on Sigerseth in different parts of her face.

Evolence is approved to fill in the moderate to deep facial wrinkles and folds such as those around the nose and mouth.

Silva used a numbing gel and a nerve block on Sigerseth so the process would be painless.

“It's like a tiny little poke, but no pain,” Sigerseth said . Little by little, Silva moved like an artist, making injections. She steps back occasionally to make sure it's even.

“I think there is a lot of art to it,” Silva said.

Within the hour, Sigerseth is done, hoping these little injections will make her look as young as she feels.

“It makes me not have the lines, it's great,” said Sigerseth. “It is turning back the clock, hopefully.”

Johnson and Johnson provided Evolence for the doctor to use on her patients after the FDA approved it in June. The product is not for use on lips or the line between the eyebrows.

It may not be good for people with recurrent allergic reactions, or those on immunosuppressive therapy for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or cancer. Once the price is set, Evolence is expected the cost about the same as other filler products - $500 to $900 per syringe.
