Workers Say Technology Has Pros, Cons

Most Workers Use Internet, E-Mail At Jobs

A survey by Pew Internet & American Life Project shows that 62 percent of adults who are currently employed use the Internet or e-mail at work, and they have mixed feelings about the impact of technology at work.

According to the survey, employees felt technology -- including the Internet and various gadgets -- give them more flexibility at work. However, many of those surveyed also said those tools added more stress and new demands to their jobs.

Of those surveyed, 45 percent of employed Americans said because of the Internet and cell phones, they are able to work occasionally from home.

The survey also found that 96 percent of those workers questioned use the Internet, e-mail or have a cell phone, even if it wasn't required for work. Pew Internet & American Life Project labeled these employees "Wired and Ready Workers."

When the Wired and Ready Workers were surveyed, 80 percent said the Internet, e-mail and cell phones have improved their ability to do their job. Seventy-three percent said those tools have improved their ability to share ideas with co-workers, and 58 percent said those technologies have allowed for more flexibility in their work schedule.

The Pew Internet Project is an initiative of the Pew Research Center, a nonprofit organization that provides information on issues and trends both in the United States and around the world. The project explores the impact of the Internet of children, families, schools, communities and the workplace.
