SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Daelynn Foreman, a partially paralyzed 12-year-old girl, weighed just 23½ pounds when she died July 31 from what authorities say was severe malnutrition and neglect. Her mother, 33-year-old Brandy Foreman, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of homicide and child neglect. She is being held without bail in Sacramento County Jail for a March 2 court appearance.Foreman was arrested over the weekend after a Sacramento County District Attorney's Office report found there was probable cause to believe she intentionally withheld food from her daughter.
A sheriff's detective called to the home by emergency workers last July "observed Daelynn to be morbidly thin. Her facial skeletal features, ribs, limb bones and ligaments were clearly outlined under her skin," according to the report.Numerous bedsores in some cases reached to the bone, the report said. The girl was paralyzed on one side from cerebral palsy. She was being taught by an in-home teacher, who reported to Child Protective Services that the girl was getting thinner. But the teacher, Cherie Bates, said the girl ate chicken nuggets, yogurt and other meals that were prepared by her mother while she was present. The district attorney's report says there is no indication the girl received any medical attention in the days before she died.
