Mosquito Tests Positive For West Nile Virus

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District received confirmation Friday that one mosquito sample collected from the Gibson Ranch area tested positive.This is the first confirmation of the virus in mosquito populations to date.Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control is already working on various treatments, that may include aerial spraying, to stop the problem.
The Centers for Disease Control advises residents to take the following steps stay safe from the West Nile Virus:Apply insect repellent to exposed skinWhen weather permits, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants whenever you are outdoorsConsider staying indoors at dawn, dusk, and in the early evening, which are peak mosquito biting timesInstall or repair window and door screens so that mosquitoes cannot get indoorsEmpty water from flower pots, pet food and water dishes, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, buckets, barrels, and cans weeklyRemove discarded tires, and other items that could collect waterBe sure to check for containers or trash in places that may be hard to see, such as under bushes or under your home
