Amid Cruelty Allegations, Schools Pull Beef

Video Apparently Shows Inhumane Treatment Of Sick Cows

UPDATED: 10:50 pm PST February 4, 2008

School districts in the region have decided not to serve the beef they already have this week while the U.S. Department of Agriculture investigates the Westland Meat Co.

The beef is not tainted, but the company admitted some workers treated sick cows inhumanely.

The alert from the California State Department of Education came out Friday after a video was released, showing inhumane treatment of cows at a Chino packing plant.

The packaging plant is owned by the Westland Meat Co. They supply the beef for more than 100,000 schools and childcare facilities statewide through the National School Lunch Program.

On Monday, second-grade students at Jefferson Elementary School in Natomas had the choice of cheese pizza and chicken nuggets.

Principal Karrie Lopes said they have a new menu that has been revised since the alert came out.

The menu features strictly chicken and turkey with no beef products.

Phyllis Bramson-Paul, the director of the California Department of Education's Nutrition Services Division, said it is always appropriate for government, the Department of Education and school districts to do what they can to ensure parent trust in the food that their children are eating at school.

The Department of Education does not know how many schools are affected.

There are 9,000 school districts in California.
