SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Winky, the 56-year-old elephant who spent nearly 40 years at the Sacramento Zoo, died Monday morning.Officials at the Performing Animal Welfare Society said Winky died at 7 a.m. after falling down five hours earlier.Winky arrived at the compound in San Andreas with chronic arthritis and joint and foot problems.
Her veterinarian from the Detroit Zoo, where Winky spent 17 years, was with her when she died.Most elephants living in captivity die before they are 50.
