Lawmaker Wants To Tax Porn Purchasers

25 Percent Tax Suggested

The talk of a bill that would tax one of the state's largest industries -- pornography -- spurred a porn star debate Monday at the Capitol.

The bill, proposed by Assemblyman Charles Calderon, levies a 25 percent tax on the sale, storage and use of adult films, videos and pay-per-view.

"It's a massive industry in California," Calderon said. "We don't know, it may well be the No. 1 industry in California."

The Whittier Democrat said the revenue would offset the negative effects of adult entertainment, including crime and health care costs

Two women with connections to the porn industry came to the Capitol to debate Calderon's proposal, which is being compared to other "sin taxes" on alcohol and tobacco.

Porn star Kayden Kross, a former Sacramento State student, discussed the financial benefits of the adult entertainment business for young women.

"All my money goes into portfolio for retirement. I plan basically on living off the money I made by the time I retire at 30," said Kross, who claims to have been in 10 adult films.

Shelly Lubben, however, supports the bill and said the higher tax could help pay for rehab and recovery services for those involved in pornography.

Lubben, who used to work in the adult industry, said young women are lured into porn by claims of fame and fortune.

"They're like 'hey girl, you're going to get fame and fortune and money. You're going to be the next hottest porn star,' she said. "But we'd be physically abused on set, and there'd be lots of exposure to drugs, and lots of free drugs and drug parties."

The bill will also tax the income of strip clubs.
