Teen Dies After Soccer Practice

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. -- A ninth-grade member of a junior varsity soccer team died after a practice at Center High School in Antelope, a school official said Wednesday.The player was identified by the county coroner as 14-year-old Brandon M. Baker.Baker collapsed on the field at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, said Scott Loehr, a representative of Center Unified School District.
Coaches provided emergency medical help and called 911, Loehr added.Baker was taken to the emergency room at Mercy San Juan Medical Center. He died at the hospital.Officials at Center High School called in chaplains and counselors on Wednesday to meet with students.School officials said any student who participates in sports must have a medical clearance and an examination, and that Baker had indeed had that examination.Students were seen signing a memorial poster at the campus.The coroner's office said an autopsy was completed, but results are not conclusive and that additional toxicology tests are pending.An investigation into the student's death is under way.A memorial service for Baker will be held Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the school.
