Garcia's Grandmother Makes Plea At Service

Councilman Slain Last Week

More than 2,000 people gathered Tuesday afternoon to remember slain Fairfield City Councilman Matt Garcia.

Chris Garcia, Matt Garcia's grandmother and the person who raised him, told the audience at the memorial that she has no hatred for her grandson's killer, but would like some answers.

"And I want to ask him, face-to-face, why did you kill my grandson? Why did you do it? Didn't you know how much we loved him? What did he do to you? What were you thinking?" Chris Garcia said during the service.

Various community members spoke at the service, which took place on the football field of Armijo High School, including Assemblywoman Lois Wolk, D-Solano, and Fairfield Mayor Harry Price.

"It wasn't long ago that Matt walked across this field and accepted his diploma as he graduated," family spokesman Ron Marlette said during the memorial. Matt Garcia graduated from the school in 2004.

Police said Matt Garcia was shot in the head Sept. 1 while visiting a friend in Cordelia.

During a Tuesday news conference, police said that the friend, Jennifer Tarbell, has been a cooperating witness. However, they did not call her a suspect or a person of interest in the case.

Meanwhile, Mayor Harry Price made progress Tuesday in his quest to increase the reward offered to find the person who killed 22-year-old Matt Garcia. No arrests have been made in the case.

Price appealed to the Solano County Board of Supervisors for help. Board members approved $50,000 in reward funds, which come in addition to $50,000 announced last week by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Price will next appeal to the city of Fairfield to commit an additional $50,000.

"I'm reminded that justice delayed all too often is justice denied," Price said in his address to supervisors.

Matt Garcia, who was voted into office in November of last year, was one of the youngest elected officials in the state. He was declared brain dead and his family took him off life support on Friday.

A makeshift memorial consisting of flowers and candles has appeared outside of City Hall.

Matt Garcia ran on a platform of helping the city's youth and discouraging gang violence. A teen center will be named in his honor.
