Yard Sales: A Sign Of The Times?

Local Residents Bring Out The Goods

It’s not unusual to see yard sales on any given weekend, but with the tough economy the bargaining is intense for those trying to make a buck or score a deal.

“I know people are worried about it,” Camille Rogado said.

Dozens of homes in the Hollywood Park area held a community-wide yard sale.

“I never believed it was going to be like this morning,” resident Bob Dake said.

On street after street, car after car pulled up with people looking for a cheaper way to shop.

“I think people, right now especially with the economy so bad are definitely looking for a deal,” Sacramento resident Heather Hull said.

Shoppers like Paula Moe said she believes yard sales could become much more common in this economy.

“I truthfully believe you'll see more and more people going to garage sales and more and more people going to thrift stores to cut corners,” Moe said.

Sellers like Eloise Bistis said she believed more and more people are looking to buy used than new.

“I think that's what is keeping this economy going, that rolling over of money from garage sales,” Bistis said.

But as much as garage sales might make some people some money, it certainly isn't enough yet to brighten what could be a tough upcoming holiday season for others.

“It's a little worse this year than last year that's for sure,” Dake said. He said he hopes it turns around.
