A man accused of stealing more than $13,000 from his landlord was found guilty by a jury Monday, prosecutors said.

Richard Esquivel, 58, of Elk Grove, allegedly rented a room in a house from a 71-year-old woman and failed to pay rent or share expenses. He also allegedly used the victim's ATM card to withdraw cash during a six-month period, officials said.

Esquivel was also accused by prosecutors of buying movies, flowers, cigars and presents online with the landlord's check card.

In December 2004 alone, Esquivel allegedly charged more than $8,000 to the woman's account, prosecutors said.

"Elder abuse is a serious crime that our communities can never tolerate," District Attorney Jeff Reisig said.

Esquivel was convicted of theft from an elder and fraudulent use of a credit card, both of which are felonies, officials said.

Esquivel will be sentenced on Nov. 21 and could face up to four years in state prison.
