Will Gay Marriage Be Taught? Teachers Weigh In

Voters To Decide On Gay-Marriage Ban Nov. 4

Recent ads from both sides of the Proposition 8 measure have focused on a debate about whether gay marriage will be taught in public schools.

The "Yes On 8" campaign said in a recent ad that if their initiative doesn't pass, children will be forced to learn about gay marriage in schools.

But opponents of the measure responded with their own ad saying that isn't true.

Educators that spoke with KCRA 3 had different opinions on whether gay marriage will play a role in their classroom curriculum.

Sue Witt, a first-grade teacher, said she thinks gay marriage will eventually be taught in schools if it remains legal.

Witt showed KCRA 3 a widely-used text book she will be using in her Folsom classroom next week.

"Marriage is definitely implied ... through the pictures, through family stories," Witt said.

Butt Witt's opinion isn't shared by all educators.

The California Teacher's Association is urging people to vote "no" on Proposition 8.

Also, some school districts contacted by KCRA 3 -- including the Sacramento City Unified, Roseville Unified and Modesto City School districts -- said they are not teaching marriage at all.

Meanwhile, San Juan, Davis and Stockton school districts said they mention "family life" in class, but it's often part of sex education and students are allowed to opt out.

Ema Gluckmann, who helped write the curriculum being used at West Campus High said that sex education is as close as her students get to hearing about marriage.

"It's not even anywhere in the curriculum now," Gluckmann said. "I'm amused why it's such a big deal."
