AIRPORT SECURITY

Airport Security Found Ignoring Unattended Bag

Sacramento Sheriff Plans To Change Deputies' Training For Airport Security

POSTED: 4:07 pm PST November 5, 2008
UPDATED: 6:36 am PST November 6, 2008

A hidden-camera investigation found federal and local officers failed to check on an unattended bag at Sacramento's airport -- prompting Sacramento's sheriff to change airport security training for his deputies.

The test was simple: KCRA 3's Mike TeSelle left a bag in the open and walked at least 20 feet away. Then, he waited for a Sacramento County deputy, airport staffer or Transportation and Security Administration agent to check on the bag.

In Terminal B, a uniformed TSA agent walked past the bag twice.

Outside Terminal A, the bag stood just feet away from a deputy; for 8 minutes, he talked on a cell phone, then walked away without ever noticing the bag. Inside Terminal A, county staff, airline employees and passengers repeatedly walked past the bag, while three deputies stood on the balcony without noticing.

"That's saying something about security. I guess they don't believe about what they are speaking," passenger Eric Pinkins said.

Only three times in five hours did anyone ask about the bag -- one was a TSA agent inside, another was an agent outside, and the third was a passenger waiting to board a plane.

Both the TSA and airport administrators refused to watch the video or comment. In a joint prepared statement, the TSA and airport director Hardee Acree said safety and security is a high priority, noting the security of the airport "rest on all of our shoulders."

A TSA spokesman called the investigation a "hit piece" and something that "doesn't make the TSA look good."

Only Sheriff John McGinness was willing to sit down with KCRA 3 to discuss the findings. He said "people need to be more diligent in terms of their duties."

"I'm not going to deny the fact that this video illustrates that we need to do a better job," the sheriff said.

Because of the KCRA 3 investigation, McGinness said the department is changing airport security training.
