SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Hundreds of volunteers set out on Tuesday to rebuild a community park, which has burned down twice, in just six days.On Sunday, those volunteers said they can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.Fort Natomas was burned the first time in June 2006 by an arsonist. Authorities blame the second fire -- which took place in May -- on a teenager, who claims the blaze was an accident.
Some volunteers said the rebuilding effort put forth should send a strong message to whoever might think about damaging Fort Natomas again."I think it shows you can't get us down. People will rebuild," said Kara Van Valkenburg, who traveled from Reno to volunteer to help build the new Fort. "You can burn it down, but you can't burn the hopes down."Brenda Washington, who has witnessed both of the Fort Natomas fires, said the effort to rebuild the beloved park makes her want to cry."I have been through this and it makes me cry," Washington said. "If one community can come together ... all can come together."Organizers of the rebuilding effort said the rubberized playing surface still needs to be put in place. The formal unveiling of the park to the public is set for Dec. 6.
