ROSEVILLE, Calif. -- The families of more than a dozen of some of the areas best young figure skaters are scrambling after the regions largest ice skating rink fired its coach.Former professional turned figure-skating coach, Michelle Ray Davis, said Skate Town terminated her contract without warning and banned her from the rink."This is what I love to do," Davis said. "I've done this for the kids. I don't teach for the money I teach for the kids, this is what they want to do."
Davis said the owner of Skate Town told her the lay off was a business decision. Some parents said Skate Town gave them no notice or reason for Davis' departure. They also said that if it was a business decision it doesn't make sense since they bring in thousands of dollars each month to train with Davis."I would never pull her from this coach," said mother Deirdre Gonzalez. Some of Davis' skaters said they were shocked at the loss of their coach."I was shocked honestly, I didn't know what to think," said skater Melanie Hearn. "It was basically, for me, like it was over. I won't take (lessons) from anyone else."Some of the parents of those who take lessons from Davis said they are standing by their coach and will try to find ice time elsewhere.Ice Land in Sacramento said it is opening its doors to Davis and her skaters but the rink is a third smaller than the ice in Roseville. The nearest competitive sized rink is in Vacaville or South Lake Tahoe."They're not going to be able to train for the level of skating that they compete," Davis said.Reported by: Lynsey Paulo
