Court Ruling Postpones Oakdale-Colfax Game

Controversy Centers On Placer High Forfeitures

UPDATED: 6:58 pm PST November 21, 2008

A prep football playoff game between Oakdale High School and Colfax High School set for Friday night has been postponed because of a judge's ruling regarding the eligibility of a Placer High School player.

At issue is Placer's forfeiture of three games because of the use of an ineligible player earlier this season.

Placer contends that the player should not have been ruled ineligible, so the school has taken the issue to court.

A judge issued a temporary restraining order on Friday to halt the game. The judge will hear arguments in the case on Monday, said Pete Saco, commissioner of the Lodi-based Sac-Joaquin Section of the California Interscholastic Federation.

Because of Placer forfeitures, Colfax earned a playoff spot against host Oakdale.

Had Placer's games not been forfeited, Placer would have been invited to meet Oakdale in the playoffs.

It was not immediately clear when the game will be rescheduled.

The CIF released the following statement late Friday:

"Due to this afternoon's court order, the Sac-Joaquin Section has been required to call off tonight's scheduled Division IV playoff football game between Colfax and Oakdale high schools. The last-minute nature of this action was beyond our control, and we regret the inconvenience to the players, coaches, referees, students, parents and alumni planning to attend the game. We are extremely concerned about the potential that the legal challenge, supported by Placer High School and its school district, has to derail the entire Division IV playoff schedule and unfairly harm eight schools that have done nothing wrong and are not parties to this dispute. The Section's playoff system is a highly calibrated sequence of games that is planned out well in advance and culminates in a statewide champion. We look forward to the judge's final ruling on this matter next week. Based on that outcome, we will render a decision about when, if and how the Division IV Section playoffs will proceed. Until such time, the Section will offer no further comment on this issue."
