Inauguration Party Expected To Draw Thousands

Mayor-Elect To Be Officially Sworn-In Next Week

Thousands are expected to fill Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday for the inauguration of Mayor-elect Kevin Johnson.

Although results of the election haven't been officially certified, Johnson is still throwing a big party as he takes the oath of office.

"We just wanted to take the opportunity to use all the community support and enthusiasm to really bring the community together (and) make it more than just a ceremonial swearing-in," said Laura Braden, a Johnson campaign volunteer.

There will be seating for 2,800 at Tuesday's inauguration party, which promises to be a show with indoor fireworks, live music and a confetti drop.

But organizers said the event is about more than pageantry. It is a reflection of the enthusiasm brought to the mayor's race from Johnson's supporters.

"We've just been overwhelmed by how much people want to help and get involved," Braden said. "They see Mayor-elect Johnson as a catalyst for change and they want to be a part of that."

City Council members who won re-election will be officially sworn-in Tuesday at Council Chambers.

Johnson will be officially sworn-in next week.
