SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- When Jacob Maddern found his mom Cara suffering a seizure at their home last week, the 7-year-old put his fear aside, called 911 and aided paramedics.

"You have to call people that you kind of don't know, but you're supposed to," Jacob said.

On Monday, Jacob was honored by the Sacramento Metro Fire Department for his bravery.

"Jacob was waiting for us at the door," said Jeff Jones, of Sacramento Metro Fire. "He led us to his mom who was unconscious (and then) led us to her meds and told us her medical history."

Firefighters showed up at the Maddern's home and let Jacob have an in-person firefighter for the day experience.

"We felt like Jacob was a success story that we want to follow through with and that he was recognized that the system works," Jones said.

As for mom, Cara Maddern said she is proud of her son

"There aren't words to tell you how proud of him I am," she said.

Fire officials said it is important to teach children how to dial 911 at an early age and to practice how to act during an emergency.
