Former Assembly Speaker's Son Arrested In Homicide

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The son of former state Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez was arrested along with three other people in connection with the October slaying of a college student, San Diego police officials said.Esteban Nunez, Ryan Jett, Leshanor Thomas and Rafael Garcia -- all 19 years old -- were placed under arrest Tuesday in Sacramento after warrants were served in the fatal stabbing of Luis Santos, officials said.Santos, 22, was leaving a party near the campus of San Diego State on Oct. 4 with four friends when a fight broke out with a second group of four men.
The verbal altercation escalated into a physical fight, which led to Santos and two of his friends being stabbed, officials said.Santos was pronounced dead at the scene.The second group of men fled the scene.The San Diego Police Department confirmed with KCRA 3 that the Esteban Nunez arrested Tuesday is the son of former state Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.Nunez was arrested at his father's home in Elk Grove, police said.He will be taken to San Diego where he will face one count of murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.Fabian Nunez was selected as the 66th Speaker of the California Assembly in 2004.He was replaced by current Assembly Speaker Karen Bass earlier this year.Attempts made by KCRA 3 to speak with the Nunez family were unsuccessful.
