STOCKTON, Calif. -- Police and security guards struggled to break up a crowd that they say got out of control at the San Joaquin County Fair Tuesday night.
Police ended up arresting 10 people and ejected more than 100.Fairgoers are expected to see a beefed-up security presence Wednesday night, but police say they are ready to call out the troops if there's a repeat of Tuesday night's disturbance near closing time, which included several fistfights."Basically, a whole bunch of girls were all over another girl just beating her, beating her up, kicking her when she was down. ... And there were others routing them on," said fairgoer Michael Wilson. The violence even spilled over to the "Kiddy Land" area of the fair, according to witnesses.Authorities said fights broke out after a hip hop show on the main stage ended. Police said they had about 30 officers on duty, but called in 20 additional officers after the violence broke out."You have some nights when you have all kids. Last night was a good example, a lot of kids. And so, you know, (there's) pushing and shoving, things like that with kids, and that's when we just say that's not acceptable and ask them to leave," said San Joaquin County Fair manager Forrest White.Despite the violence, no serious injuries were reported.
