Wildfire Forces Evacuations In Butte County

OROVILLE, Calif. -- A wildfire has burned 700 acres and forced evacuations and destroyed at least one home near Oroville in Butte County. 
The fire is burning in the area of Oregon Gulch Road at Cherokee Road. Authorities said the blaze broke out around 4 p.m. Wednesday. The fire spread quickly and forced the evacuation of residents from dozens of homes in the area. "About 100 residents in that area have been evacuated and are asked to go to the fire evacuation center," said California Department of Forestry spokeswoman Anne McClean.Fire crews attacked the fire from the air and the ground."We do ask that people who are not in the area, please do not come up to the area, and the people who must come up, travel with great caution because there is a lot of emergency equipment, at this point in time, fighting the fire," McClean said.Fire officials the blaze was 45 percent contained Thursday morning with full containment expected by 8 p.m.
