KYBURZ, Calif. -- Residents along Highway 50 are keeping a close eye on the sky as the threat of flash flooding and mudslides remains.
Highway 50 was still closed Monday night from Pollock Pines to Meyers. Caltrans spent the day cleaning up a mudslide just east of Kyburz. The roadway was not damaged. The slides were caused by recent heavy rains in an area that was devastated last week by "Fred's Fire," which burned nearly 8,000 acres in El Dorado County."What we're concerned about is this is exactly what was predicted to happen. What we're afraid is that this is just the predecessor of things to come," U.S. Forest Service spokesman Dennis Cullen said. "That storm is supposed to be double the intensity of the one we just had. They told us one to two inches yesterday, and I believe we got every bit of two inches," said El Dorado County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Kevin House. With more rain in the forecast, the towns of Kyburz and Silver Fork remain under mandatory evacuation because of the threat of more mudslides. The recent fire left little vegetation to prevent erosion and flooding."I was not going to leave but they told me, 'Leave and don't look back' ... to take everything I needed ... to act as though I would never see anything again," evacuated resident Betty Wurtz said."It's still a very dangerous situation up here on Highway 50," Cullen said.A California Highway Patrol cruiser was swept away in the mudslide. The officer inside was OK. He was rescued by another CHP officer.Authorities said the highway will remain closed at least until Wednesday.
