Tower Theater Supporters Celebrate Victory

City Council Calls Off Negotiations For New Multi-Plex

A rally was held Tuesday night near Sacramento's Tower Theater to celebrate a move by the city council to call off negotiations for a new multi-plex of theaters along K Street.

Tower supporters fear the added competition from the new theaters would force the classic movie house to close. They say the move by the city council is a step in the right direction, but they also want officials to block any attempts to build new theaters in the downtown area.

"A lot of people have grown up going to this theater as children, as adults, and as grandparents ... I get letters ... They love it ... It's like the Memorial Auditorium," said Luree Stetson of the Tower District Alliance.

Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo told KCRA 3 Tuesday that she supports the Tower Theater and would do what she could to protect the historic building.
