AUBURN, Calif. -- The FBI has renewed its search for a woman who disappeared more than 20 years ago, digging at a home in the Lake of the Pines community of Nevada County on Tuesday.
FBI and Auburn police officials dug in the yard of an Auburn home most of the day Tuesday in connection with the 1982 disappearance of Janet Kovacich."At this time, we're looking for evidence," said FBI spokeswoman Dorcas Reilly. "There has never been a body found. She disappeared, and there was never any sign of her since that disappearance." The home, which belongs to the woman's parents-in-law, was searched for hours Tuesday. Investigators said they were digging for a family dog, which they say could be a "key part of the investigation." FBI officials said homeowners are not suspects. "Today, we don't have any suspects," Reilly said. "We will be revisiting anyone who was connected with the case, interviewing anyone that knew her, that might have had anything to do (with) or might have any information leading to the solution to the case." The search warrant on the property was issued to only search for the dog, according to authorities. Now that the dog's body has been found, officials say they might ask for a new search warrant to continue digging.
