MODESTO, Calif. -- A Modesto loan company is having to spend thousands of dollars to notify all its customers that their personal identities may have been stolen. Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department investigators said that someone crawled through the roof of Valley Wide Financial Services and into the office's bathroom on March 27, taking hard drives from company computers.
"On this business, personal applications, names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security (numbers), sometimes driver's licenses (were on the hard drives). So, it's everything someone would need to steal someone's identity," said Sheriff's Department spokesman Jason Woodman. The company does say the files were encrypted, but they're taking no chances. They have spent almost $20,000 to warn all their customers that identities could be at risk. Investigators say they have few leads in the case.
