Hot Temeratures Take Toll On Some Crops

For some crops, the hot weather is just fine for growing. But the 100-plus temperatures in the valley over the week have put a strain on other crops.

Green Grapes

Growers expect to see 100-degree weather in the valley. However, a long spell of very hot temperatures can spell trouble for some crops, such as wine grapes.

"The vines tend to get a little bit stressed, and they try to shut down," said Lodi-Woodbridge Wine Commission spokesman Mark Chandler. "So, what we try to do is keep the moisture on, keep the water on so they don't show heat stress. And once the temperatures get back down to the mid-90s they will go ahead and start creating sugar again."

Kevin Phillips, of Phillips Farms, said he cut back some leaves because of worries about mildew and the wet month of May. But now, he has to worry about his grapes being sunburned. And orchard crops are also susceptible.

"It will have a little bit of sunburning on the orchard crops," Phillips said. "I've seen it in some of my peaches and nectarines. Some of the stuff is a little more exposed and getting sunburns on them."

Phillips Farms raises a variety of crops for the family's roadside store, including peaches and pumpkins. But melons are a concern right now.

"This will definitely speed them up. And if they're already ripe in the field, they'll start cooking out there. And then it's not good. It depends where they're at in the growth cycle," Phillips said.

Corn and tomatoes will do well in the high heat, growing faster. But there is a greater need for irrigation water.

"When you get weather like this, you don't have a choice. You really (have) to hit everything with water because things will dry up on you real fast," Phillips said.
