Senate May Vote On GOP Budget Plan
Republicans Oppose Tax Increases

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- State senators may vote on a Republican budget proposal today.The Republican alternative avoids tax increases but borrows against the state lottery. Democrats and Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said that means pushing this year's budget problems into future years.The GOP governor does favor Republican proposals for a spending cap and giving the governor authority to make midyear budget cuts.
The Assembly is set to meet at noon, while the Senate will meet at 2 p.m.The state's fiscal year began on July 1.
