SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Kevin Johnson will formally be sworn in Tuesday as the new mayor of Sacramento in a private ceremony.

His oath will be administered by the city clerk.

Outgoing Mayor Heather Fargo kept a low profile on her final day. Her office was packed and cleaned Monday as she made room for her successor.

Johnson was ceremonially sworn in last Tuesday at Memorial Auditorium, but he had to wait for the election results to be legally certified.

He held his first open news conference Tuesday morning.

Johnson also announced his initial plans to make local government more accountable and accessible to residents on Tuesday. They include having an open City Hall workspace, open office hours where people may talk directly to the mayor, and monthly town hall meetings.

"These are some simple, but important first steps in the process of making sure every Sacramento resident have access to me as the mayor of this city and an open door to participate in their local government," Johnson said in a statement.

Spokesman Steve Maviglio said Johnson will preside over a meeting tonight as the city's mayor.
