SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley is asking the governor for help. Shelley is facing multiple accusations that he misused voter-outreach money for his own campaign purposes. He is now asking Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to release $29 million in federal funds, which are designed for voter outreach in the November election.
"We reiterated very clearly that whatever process, review, approval, or oversight process the governor and the administration, the Legislature chooses to have, we're comfortable with," Shelley said. "We just think it's important that -- to the extent the federal government is making funds available to ensure the integrity of the election -- that those funds be used."The governor released $15 million last week to aid the election process.Last month, lawmakers launched an investigation into Shelley's use of help "America Vote Act" funds. He has denied any wrongdoing.
