SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- It's not unusual to see campaign signs go up when an election nears, but a new sign being posted across California is calling for the resignation of the man who's in charge of the state's elections.
Questions continue to swirl around Secretary of State Kevin Shelley. His own campaign funding concerns have already triggered federal and state investigations. And on Thursday, there were reports that showed he charged taxpayers for a trip to Hawaii.A statewide group called the California Republican Assembly has printed 1,000 signs just for Sacramento. Group members began putting them up in the downtown area last weekend."They're really designed for the public to help generate public support for our effort to see him resign," said group spokesman Jeff Evans.Evans says the signs are driving people to the group's Web site -- ShelleyMustResign.com, which includes links to recent newspaper stories and an online petition drive to encourage his resignation. "We've had two major newspapers now editorialize, calling for his resignation. I think that number is going to continue to grow," Evans said. The problems for Shelley, a San Francisco Bay Area Democrat, are serious. He's facing a federal investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney, as well as a grand jury inquiry in Sacramento and two independent state investigations.
The latest revelation is that Shelley charged taxpayers for tickets to Hawaii for a speaking engagement and to attend a wedding. Records released by his office show a charge of almost $1,300 to speak to a convention of California Peace Officers. The meeting program shows that Shelley was a panelist and not the keynote speaker. Twenty California legislators attended the same event in Maui, and none of them charged taxpayers. Shelley's office released a short statement in response to the new sign campaign that said, "The secretary of state is absolutely not resigning."Assemblyman Darrel Steinberg, D-Sacramento, said that Shelley should not resign, but that "these are serious accusations, and they ought to be looked at and investigated fully and completely."Shelley's office said the trip to Hawaii was appropriate because it was official business. He was commenting about the recall election.Republicans counter that he didn't have to fly to Maui to talk to Californians about a California election.
