WINfirst Files Bankruptcy
250 Sacramento Workers Recently Laid Off

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- WINfirst, the communications company offering cable, high-speed Internet and phone service, has filed for federal chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the company's general manager confirmed late Monday.
That announcement came just a week after the company laid off 250 employees and construction workers in the Sacramento area.
General manager Winston Ashizawa said the filing will help "insure the stability of continuing operations in Sacramento."
Ashizawa also said WINfirst will retain its remaining 160 Sacramento employees and anticipates no further changes.
The company has promised to spend $500 million to bring the first bundled broadband services to Sacramento and install fiber optic cable to every neighborhood by 2005.
