Crash At 'Critical Mass' Caught On Videotape

Bicyclists Try To Make Point During Rally

Valley bicycle activists claim motorists are wreaking havoc on the roadways, and now they've got home video that they say drives home their complaints.

Video

Activists said that it started out as a peaceful demonstration with dozens of bicyclists cruising Sacramento's streets to make a point.

"Just a time to come together and be a solid voice that we need more bicycle lanes in Sacramento," said bicycle activist Josh Nichol.

Riders in the so-called "critical mass" rally admit that they were deliberately slowing traffic last Friday afternoon, when one driver jumped the median and apparently bumped one rider. And it was captured on videotape. But the bicyclists who were hit have not filed a complaint with police.

Critical Mass Accident

"We're not really interested in having this person incarcerated. We're not angry so much at her. The whole focus of 'critical mass' is to put that message out there for cyclists," Nichol said

"Let's be honest. The motorists stage a 'critical mass' every day," said California Bicycle Coalition spokesperson Chris Morfas.

Other activists said that they agree with the "critical mass" message, even if they may disagree with its less than law-abiding methods.

"We suggest that all bicyclists ought to follow the rules of the road. But that, in turn, all motorists need to give bicyclists a fair share of respect," Morfas said.

The driver of the car was not available when KCRA 3 tried to contact her.
