Storm Brings Hail, Rain, Tornados

Heavy Rain Hits Sacramento Area

An unseasonably cold system off the coast of California brought hail, wind, rain and tornados to the northern part of the state Monday.

The heaviest rain hit downtown Sacramento just before noon, eventually turning to hail and piling up like snow in some places.

The rain fell fast enough to overwhelm storm drains and cause some minor street flooding.

Flooding was also seen on area freeways, forcing the California Highway Patrol to escort traffic through trouble spots.

In Yolo County, a funnel cloud was spotted near Dixon and a tornado touched down near the town of Robbins, near Knights Landing.

The National Weather Service issued five separate tornado warnings in Northern California Monday afternoon. Severe thunderstorm warnings were also issued in several counties, including Amador and Calaveras.

In the Sierra, the storm meant a layer of fresh snow for a region that was already gearing up for summer. The return of winter weather caught some residents and motorists off guard, snarling traffic on Sierra highways.

Snow levels were expected to be around 4,500 to 5,000 feet.

The wet weather was forecasted to continue into the evening Monday.
