Officials Ask For Help Deterring School Vandals
Watch Program Uses Schools' Neighbors To Notify Police
SACRAMENTO, Updated 4:30 p.m. PST December 26, 2000 -- Sacramento Police are asking for assistance from the public to help keep schools free of vandalism during the holiday break.
They want mischievous kids to know that while schools are closed, someone is watching over the campuses.
Police and Sacramento City Unified School District officials are walking neighborhoods near school campuses asking residents for assistance with a vandalism prevention program.
SCUSD police officer Vince Matranga explained the program and how residents could help to residents around campuses. He also handed out cards with phone numbers that neighbors could call if they see anything strange on campus.
"Should you see or hear anything unusual please call one of the telephone numbers that is on the card," Matranga said. Officials are asking for help from residents living near public schools to keep an eye on the schools
Many residents are in favor of the programs and were willing to help protect school property.
Ella Rose lives across the street from one Sacramento middle school and says that she and her neighbors always pay attention to what goes on at the school.
"It right in front of us and we don't want anything to happen around us," Rose said.
Schools have utilized this program in the past and say that it has helped cut down on the number of vandalism incidents.
Anyone with information about school vandalism is urged to call (916) 264-4444.
