Death Row To Move To Folsom?
New Folsom Prison Would House Inmates If Bill Passes
FOLSOM, Calif. -- Opposition is growing to a plan to move inmates on California's death row to a new location in the Sacramento Valley.
The state Assembly approved a bill, 65-3, Tuesday that would have all death row inmates at San Quentin State Prison be temporarily housed at the Sacramento state prison in Folsom.
"We can handle that mission with regards to the better control and more security that's available here at the more modern institution. It's also centrally located, easy access to the courts," New Folsom Prison spokesman Billy Mayfield said.
The state is studying whether to close San Quentin.
Some Folsom residents are afraid that their city would end up as the new home of death row.
"I don't approve of it, because they've got two prisons here already with enough inmates in it. And why ship some more here, especially those who are on death row," Folsom resident Jerry Hudson said.
Other's are not as concerned about the inmates themselves.
"I have faith that the prison is safe and well handled and well managed," Folsom resident Natalie Lee said.
If it does happen, officials said that only the most violent criminals on death row, the ones who pose a threat to other inmates and staff, would make the move.
The prisoners would be held in Folsom, but the executions would take place at San Quentin.
The bill is now before the Senate.
