ALCOHOL-RELATED FACTS TO CONSIDER
  • It is illegal for anyone under age 21 to drink alcohol.
  • Alcohol is the number one drug problem among young people.
  • Of the 20 million junior and senior high school students in America, one-half drink alcohol monthly.
  • Drinking alcohol increases the risk that a teen will commit or be a victim of a serious crime, such as assault, rape or murder.
  • Drinking alcohol increases the likelihood that a teen will engage in risky unprotected sex.
  • Teens who drink are more likely than other teens to attempt suicide.
  • If a teen drinks a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time, alcohol poisoning can occur, leading to coma or even death.
  • 2.6 million teenagers don't know that a person can die from an alcohol overdose.
  • People who begin drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to be dependent on alcohol as adults than those who wait until age 21.
  • Drivers under age 21 can have their drivers license revoked or suspended for one year for driving with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of .01 or more or for refusing to take a BAC test.
  • Traffic collisions are the greatest single cause of death for people 6 to 28 years old.
