Sapp Spouts Off About Raiders' Al Davis

Former DT Tells Showtime Owner Interfered With Team

UPDATED: 6:04 am PDT October 3, 2008

Former Oakland defensive tackle Warren Sapp is speaking out against the Raiders.

"Nobody tells you how bad it is," Sapp said on Showtime's "Inside the NFL." "Any person that calls me on the telephone, (I tell them) do not go anywhere near Oakland."

On the cable program, Sapp blamed the team's owner, Al Davis, for many of the team's problems. He said Davis never gave coach Lane Kiffin -- who was fired this week -- a fair chance to turn the program around. Sapp, who played four seasons with the Raiders, also claimed Davis was too involved in the team, even calling plays.

"I remember the first two weeks I was there, we played a preseason game," Sapp said on "Inside the NFL." "Somebody came up one time and said, 'We're going deep right here, dog.' I said, 'how do you know?' He said, 'The phone just rang.'

Sapp also told "Inside the NFL" that Davis' knowledge of football is outdated.

"Al Davis knows football -- it's just '60s and '70s football," Sapp told "Inside the NFL." "You take him out, put him at home watching film or whatever he is doing -- you have a functioning football organization."

Russell Caught Off-Guard By Davis' Remarks

Earlier this week, Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was caught off-guard when Davis claimed Kiffin was against drafting Russell at No. 1 in the 2007.

Russell said he thought he had a good relationship with the former Oakland coach. The quarterback said the two often joked around with each other, and that Kiffin worked closely with the young player during the offseason.
