More Than 30 Teams Expected To Compete

Water polo is one the fastest growing team sports in America, and this weekend, the Gold Country Water Polo Club will host the Masters National Water Polo Championship Tournament for men and women.

More than 30 teams from around the country will compete, including athletes who have participated in past Olympics and some hope to compete in future Olympics.

The host team, Gold Country, has 50 members on its squad, ranging in age from 16 to 52.

Water polo is very physical game, above and below the surface.

"About 90 percent of the game is played under water. There's a lot of grabbing and suit pulling ... not so much with the ladies, but that does happen sometimes," player Craig Thayer said.

"It's not a dirty game, it's simply physically demanding, and it forces individuals to play at a high level, not only intellectually, but also to push themselves to a physical capacity that most people aren't necessarily comfortable," player Ryan Eisberg said.

The tournament starts Friday and continues through Sunday at the Roseville Aquatic Complex. Click here for complete tournament information.
