SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Are you planning a weekend escape or summer vacation? Hitting the road in a recreation vehicle might be an affordable option. But there are some things you should consider before getting behind the wheel.

Thanks to advanced bookings and more available units, RV rentals are expected to grow by 36 percent this year. It can be a bargain vacation, but you need to plan ahead, according to experts.

It's a way of life for some and a new adventure for others.

RV dealer Fred Lemke says people should ask themselves where they want to go, what they want to do in the RV, and how many people will be on the trip.

Depending on size, a three-day weekend will cost about $750.

You don't need a special license to drive an RV. Lemke said almost anybody can do it. And if your insurance doesn't cover the RV rental, an Allstate representative says it would cost about $14 a day.

Lemke said accidents are few, like people backing into something or hitting a tree limb.
